Perhaps a different cast of characters could do for the same thing?
Which cast do you have in mind?
I think Penny & Aggie works fine with the "alignments" idea because its protagonists aren't a *single* group of friends (e.g. like Faans or CRFH).. In *those* comics I'd have a hard time spreading the protagonists all over the table, rather than have them grouping them all to a handful of squares instead...
