Imagine having to deal with the guy who was doing the scamming. :)
They actually caught him. Seems he does this at lots of conventions there at the BCC. In fact, i need to post a rant telling people that anyone who was approached by this guy needs to contact me ASAP :)
Oh, he's the guy I'm talking about. Bilking people out of money is bad enough, but calling himself a fan (or "Friend of Megatokyo") at the same time is a special kind of offensive.
Dang, I have never been to any type of Con so far but.... What that dude did is so very not cool!!! No person who is truly an anime/manga fan should behave in such a disgraceful manner as this man did...
Ugh, that is just so wrong!!! It makes me mad that some dude thought he could scam MegaTokyo and anime/manga fans like that!!!!! Ugh, that is very distasteful and discouraging to young future Con-goers.... I am also VERY upset that he scammed MegaTokyo Fans!!! I am a fan of your awesome work Fred-sama, masterful manga-ka of comedy and and gaming mixed with real life drama, thank you for your wonderful and inspiring work!!!
Arigatou Fred-sama!!!
Owari, Kanna-chan
Aside from offending Fred and the rest of MegaTokyo staff/fans, disgracing and abusing the name of the Marines is appalling. :(
If I met this guy.... well it goes without saying. Might have to go Junpei style on his rear-end.
I am sorry and angry about a fine fellow like Fred and his friends being used, but to impersonate a US Marine makes my blood boil. Know what? Don't jail this guy. Slap his ass in a uniform and send him to Baghdad tomorrow. He wants to play Marine? Let's see how long his candy ass lasts in the land of Lawrence. Let the punishment fit the crime.
I'm in complete agreement with gridsleep! To go to an any kind of con and scamm ppl who are just tring to have fun is bad enough, but to add injury to insault he also drags both megatokyo and the Marine's name throught the mud sort to speek by his actions. and the punishment should fit the crime! He should be put into the middle east asap, and if he survives the rest of his life he should be fred's personal work servent to make up for such actions with out pay ofcourse
What makes you think the marines want to put up with him?
I can't think of a worse thing to do than put him in a situation where lives depend on him!
i totally agree, i wouldnt want to put my life in a sleazeball's hand anyday LOL jail would be better for him cuz at least u dont put other lives in danger >< just give him life LOL so he will no and mabye make a statement to not underestimate MT fans :)
I'm currently IN Iraq and I dont want him here. If he doesnt have the discipline to not con people out of their money then he most definately shouldnt be somewhere were lives are at stake. AND he disgraced the Marines that way! I don't know if he's a Marine or not but if he isn't then he should be charged with impersonating military personell. Marine is a title you have to earn, and I do not take that lightly. I didn't go though all that training and hardship to earn that title just so that joe schmuckatele can simply pluck the name up and do with it what he wants! And on a sidenote, thanks for your comic fred, I'd have gone insane long ago out here without it.
This guy actually approached my brother and I outside the convention. He didn't mention megatokyo, or he would have been drop kicked, but he did try to con us out of money to get back to DC. It was transparent to us only because we're very familiar with traveling between DC and Baltimore. I'm glad they caught him.
I have a friend in the Marines, and hearing things like this really ticks me off. To Fred and everyone who this guy tried to or did take advantage of, give him hell.
I kind of wish this had happend in Seattle, we have a number of deep waterways. Oh well I hear Leavenworth is nice this time year.
I too am very upset that someone would do such a thing to those who came to the con to have fun, but end up getting screwed over by a heartless man who only cares about himself.
I will be dealing with cases like this a lot soon as I am in the Criminal Justice studies in college and training to become part of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I hope "A.C. Riley" gets what he deserves rather than a minor slap on the wrist. Fred, Hawk, and those of the MT Booth, you guys brighten my day a lot! I look forward to more Megatokyo l33t-ness.
Yah know, I'd dearly love to introduce this fellow to actual USMC members I know who are actual Megatokyo readers. Maybe, just maybe in 20-30 years they'll find all the body parts.
I cannot believe the nerve of some people. Glad they got him and while I agree that you don't want in over there in Iraq with you; I think sending him through training would be a good idea. Make him see what it takes to be a Marine, that would be something. We need to get a hard-ass drill instructor like the one from the movie Full Metal Jacket.
I would like to know what happens to him; so please post if you find out.
I ran into someone at A-kon 07 that did about exactly the same thing! He didn't mention his name being A.C. Reily, but I didn't ask. He just mentioned needing money for the bus.
I somewhat suspected something was up when I saw him later as I walked away just chatting it up with some people casually like he hadn't really needed any money, but oh well.
I hope he gets what he deserves, but in the end, if two bucks gets to someone that needs it 20% of the time, it's well worth it.
Im thinking send Mr. A.C.Reily out to the Middle East, but not in the hands of the Marines.. maybe more in the line of fire... possibly. That'll give him a "run for his money". Don't bother with the jail system though, Baltimore is good for just giving a slap on the wrist.
Sticky situation mate. Kudos on the way you handled it too Prio.
I shure hope everyone got their money back.
If he wants to represent himself as a military personnel. The Civilian courts should just place him in the hands of Military Police then he should be taken to Military Court of Justice and judged with extreme prejudice.
Flat out-death to scammers. I say we feed him to Gabe and Tycho.
Wow, thats just evil. I wasn't at Otokon... because I live in the UK, but If I saw this guy I'd give him a punch in the teeth for you :P
This guy is still doing this around the Baltimore Area at-large. Beware of this guy lurking anywhere around downtown.
